The East Alabama Rural Innovation and Training Hub (EARTH) based in Sylacauga, Alabama, is a five-year initiative focused on advancing regional economic growth, innovation, education, and entrepreneurship. Located on the 30-acre site of the former Avondale Mills, EARTH will renovate an existing 114,000 square foot building into a comprehensive campus serving over 11,000 individuals annually, and aimed at developing local workforce skills and entrepreneurship, fostering innovation and technologies, creating high-quality jobs, and leveraging local resources. The new campus will house Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement (SAFE), a community-based nonprofit that provides workforce training and support services for families in East Alabama. Additional key partners include Gener8tor, the East Alabama Regional Planning Commission, the Alabama Department of Human Resources, Coosa Valley Medical Center, and the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, providing programming focused on workforce development in industry clusters including manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, information technology, regenerative agriculture, hospitality and the culinary arts. EARTH will create 125 construction jobs and 55 full-time jobs with over 86% of full-time jobs accessible to low-income people. All jobs created will provide comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and will offer opportunities for advancement. EARTH relied on NMTC financing to bridge the gap between the high upfront capital costs and the limited operating revenues generated by the Sponsor. Without NMTC assistance, the sponsor would be unable to fully finance the construction and operation of the facility.
