Kingswood Community Center

Wilmington, Delaware

The Kingswood Community Center (Kingswood) has been a cornerstone of the Wilmington, Delaware community for over 75 years. To best serve the growing community, the former facility is being replaced with a new 80,600 square foot multi-use community center. The new facility will enhance services for the entire Riverside neighborhood. Annually, The Early Learning Academy will serve up to 200 children and Nemours Children’s Health will provide care for 8,000 patients, with 80% on Medicaid. The Senior Care Center will serve 120 low-income seniors and community programming, led by The WRK Group (a non-profit alliance between Kingswood Community Center, REACH Riverside Development Corporation, and The Teen Warehouse) will offer programs like EMPOWER, which facilitates upward economic mobility for public housing residents, to families to help them achieve self-sufficiency and financial independence. Overall, the numerous services and opportunities provided by KCC will serve over 18,000 community members annually. Located in a deep distress area with a poverty rate of 45.9% and unemployment rate 1.5x national average, Kingswood creates 62 full-time jobs, retains 74 jobs, and creates approximately 250 construction jobs. The sponsor raised funding through capital contributions starting in 2021 to put towards the development and had exhausted all donation and grant opportunities, leaving Kingswood with a funding gap. As a not-for-profit, the sponsor is dependent on grants and donations, therefore Kingswood would not be possible without NMTC financing the gap to complete construction.
