The Crossings at Brick Church Station
East Orange, New Jersey

The Crossings at Brick Church Station (Brick Church) is an urban, mixed-use redevelopment anchored by a fresh food ShopRite Supermarket, 24,000 square feet of retail space, Newark Community Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center, and mixed-income residences in a town center format. As part of a larger development, the Phase 1A NMTC financing will fund the ShopRite Supermarket, which will provide fresh food to 22,000 people annually in a food desert as the only grocery store in a 2.5 mile radius, the FQHC, and additional retail and restaurant space. Phase 1B, which will be built simultaneously, will include additional market-rate and affordable housing. The Newark Community Health Center is expected to serve over 4,000 patient visits per year, 75% of whom are LIPs in this medically underserved area. Brick Church will create 66 new jobs and 596 construction jobs in an area where more than 24% of local households are living at or below the poverty line with an unemployment rate is 39.48%, 1.88x the national average. Without NMTC financing, the anchor tenant, ShopRite Supermarket would not be able to afford the high market-rate rent at this location with the space and build out that required and would relocate to a more affordable location, forcing its 170 employees to relocate or find work elsewhere.
