Detroit Manufacturing Systems

Detroit, Michigan

Detroit Manufacturing Systems (DMS) is a manufacturer and supplier in the automotive industry that was founded in Detroit, Michigan in 2012. The company operates out of a leased 482,000 square foot facility in Detroit and supplies major automotive manufacturers, primarily the Ford Motor Company. DMS has diversified its production capabilities to include manufactured parts for larger commercial vehicles, and this expansion has required significant investment in new equipment and leasehold improvements at its Detroit plant. Located in an area with a 42.9% poverty rate and an unemployment rate of 27.8%, 3.4x the national average, DMS will retain 274 jobs and create 64 new jobs. The project supports Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s strategic focus of supporting businesses in the manufacturing industry of mobility and automotive manufacturing and in this geographically disadvantaged area. DMS promotes from withing and has an apprenticeship program for skilled trades, such as electricians. The typical line job has opportunity to grow into more senior roles in the company including management roles. Due to increased costs for capital, labor, and equipment, DMS would not otherwise be able to execute this expansion without the use of NMTC financing.
